Top 10 iOS music apps

Whether you're learning music or just like listening to it, your iPhone can be your beat buddy, your piano pal or your... ok I'm out of music-friendship alliterations, but you get the picture. Here are ten apps for your iPhone to help you stay musical.

1. SoundHound - Free

If you're someone who listens to a lot of music and forgets the artist, or listens to the radio and would like to know what those damn kids are listening to these days, SoundHound is the app for you. The app has a pretty good speed rate for music recognition and what I like about it is you can hum a four second tune and the app will attempt to recognize it with fairly good success rates. An alternative is, of course, Shazam, but SoundHound has faster recognition (depending on your data plan) and has room for hums!

2. TuneIn Radio - Free

We're all a little bit angry that the iPhone doesn't come with FM but TuneIn Radio is a bittersweet fix. Sweet because you finally have radio on your phone. Bitter because it consumes a boatload of data if you're not hooked up to wifi. The app has categories of radio stations you can listen to from around the world like sports and news, as well as local radio.

3. Ringtone Designer - Free

Ringtones can be quite the devil. Not only to listen to but also to make. Instead of converting the songs on your computer to .m4r and transfering over the song to your phone, make the ringtone from songs you already have on your phone using Ringtone Designer. If you have iOS 5, you can also use the app along with the songs on your phone to make text message and email alert tones.

4. Drum Kit - Free

If you want to try a new instrument before buying it, or if you just want to annoy people, Drum Kit gives you a six piece kit with four toms, snare, bass, hi-hat (open and closed), crash, ride and splash, that you can tap and beat away. You can also practice "playing drums" by beating the app along with a song from your music library. To help you when you first start out, the app has a metronome you can use to keep you in beat.

5. Gibson Learn & Master w/ Studio Share - Free

If you want to learn the guitar, your iPhone allows you to learn with one of the best. The Gibson Learn & Master features lessons made in collaboration with Legacy Learning Systems to create a lesson system for you to learn the instrument. The app also comes with a way for you to record what you learn and play to send to your friends and the social networks. The feature that allows this is called Studio Share and is free for 90 days and 45 hours, after which, you can start buying subscriptions.

6. Guitar Tuner - GuiTune Lite - $0.99

Now that you're learning how to play the guitar, you also need to learn how to tune one. Guitar Tuner has the frequency of the pitch that each of your strings has to be and when you pluck a string, the app will tell you how near or far you are to the perfect note. The app has a good record with accuracy and also saves you the additional expense of buying a tuner which runs out of battery more often than you would like.

7. djay - $0.99

If turntables are more your tune, then try your hand at spinning on this app. The app connects to your music library to let you mix away. The app also features an auto mix option which you can use for parties. There are multiple effects you can play with as well as integrate the app with iCloud and AirPlay. The app is optimized to support iOS multitasking and background operation.

8. Saavn Music - Free

Saavn provides you with your Hindi music fix on your iPhone. You can play your favourite Bollywood songs, create playlists and listen to weekly playlists created by the 'experts' over at Saavn. You can also choose your audio quality settings to optimize your listening experience. Saavn is also one of those apps that can connect to your Facebook Timeline so you and your friends can share and discover more Indian music.

9. Band of the Day - Music - Free

This app is an excellent way to discover new music and bands. The app provides you with a new band everyday as well as articles, videos and their best songs. Bands are selected from around the world, across genres. The music player requires a lot of data so we'd recommend using the app on wifi. Here's your chance at free music streaming entire songs to try before you buy.

10. Touch Xylophone - Free

You know what? Do something different. Read up on a dog breed you know nothing about. Say an audible 'hi' to someone you barely make eye contact with regularly. Play a xylophone. On your iPhone. You can't deny that music from a xylophone has a pretty interesting texture to it and while you only have one octave on this app, you can play notes and chords and start making your own little tunes. Get your iPhone-ing friends to download the app too and become iPhone xylophone buskers for a day. Just for fun!

Music on the iPhone is all about fun. If you become next generation's rock star in the process, hey, you beat Lady Gaga to it!

La Merce Festival in Barcelona

Towards the end of September Barcelona begins to limber up for the largest event on its festival calendar, La MercĂ©, a celebration of the city’s patron saint “Mare de Deu de la MercĂ©”. The festival heralds the end of summer and the onset of the autumn months. The festival is a real big deal for the people of Barcelona and the still temperate weather means that, in true Mediterranean fashion, must of the fun takes place outside. There’s a massive amount to do whilst the festival is on with events popping up all over the city and over 3000 artists

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 Review

A surefire sign that Ultrabooks are growing up is that prices are coming down. The latest example: the Lenovo IdeaPad U310, a $799 sequel to the U300s. This notebook features a faster Core i5 processor and pairs 32GB of flash memory with a 500GB hard drive to offer both fast resumes and gobs of storage. Lenovo also remembered to include an SD Card slot this time around (huzzah!) on the stylin' aluminum chassis. So just how much Ultrabook do you get for the money?

Toshiba 47L7200U review

The L7200U Cinema Series is Toshiba’s top-of-the-line flagship for 2012. The 47-inch model is a 3D, Smart, edgelit-LED HDTV that does a lot for an MSRP of $1,899. Compare that to Samsung’s 46-inch ES8000 , which is over $1000 more expensive. The 47L7200U is a sleek, attractive TV. It has a few interesting new functions, what Toshiba calls TriVector™ 2D to 3D Conversion, Dual-Core Cinema Quality Engine™, and a side-mounted IR flasher for linking infrared devices, such as a Comcast cable box, to the TV’s MediaGuide function. That’s a lot of branded technology.
