Install Windows XP Using USB

How to Install Windows XP Using USB

Some computers do not have CD-ROM drives, which makes it difficult to install or re-install Windows XP if the need arises. The solution is to make a Windows XP USB installation drive. The initial setup process is straightforward and makes use of free software that formats the USB memory device to accept the XP installation files and program it to be read as a boot disk in the target computer

Create the USB Installation Drive

  • Step 1
Download the software pack with the programs required to create the USB installation drive to the desktop of the computer with the CD-ROM drive (see Resources).
  • Step 2
Double-Click the "Komku-SP-usb.exe" icon on the desktop and click "Install" when the dialog window appears.
  • Step 3
Insert the USB memory device into the USB port of the computer with the CD-ROM drive.
  • Step 4
Open the C:\Komku\PeToUSB\ folder and double-click the "PeToUSB.exe" icon.
  • Step 5
Choose "USB Removable" as the destination drive and mark the check box next to "Enable Disk Format." Mark the boxes next to "Quick Format" and "Enable LBA," then give the drive a name in the "Drive Label" text field. Click "Start" to initiate the USB preparation.
  • Step 6
Press "Yes" in the two subsequent dialog boxes to confirm the choices and format the USB memory device.
  • Step 7
Press "OK" once the process is complete.
  • Step 8
Click on the "Start" button and choose "Run" from the start menu. Type "cmd" and hit "OK" to open the command prompt window.
  • Step 9
Type "cd\" without the quotation marks in the command prompt window, hit "ENTER," then type "cd komku\bootsect," no quotation marks, followed by "ENTER" again.
  • Step 10
Enter "bootsect /nt52 H:" without quotation marks and press "ENTER." H: is the letter of the USB drive and may be different for different users. Be sure to enter the correct drive letter.
  • Step 11
Type "cd.." without the quotation marks, press "ENTER" then type "cd usb_prep8" without the quotation marks, and hit "ENTER."
  • Step 12
Enter "usb_prep8" without quotation marks, press "ENTER," then press any key to continue.
  • Step 13
Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  • Step 14
Type "1" in the command prompt window, press "ENTER," then select the CD-ROM drive that contains the XP CD from the list of available drives and press "OK."
  • Step 15
Change the "Virtual TempDrive" if the current drive letter shown is in use by the computer by typing "2" and pressing "ENTER." Most users will skip this step.
  • Step 16
Type "3," press "ENTER" and indicate which drive letter the USB memory device is located on.
  • Step 17
Type "4," press "ENTER" and follow the onscreen instructions to finish creating the Windows XP installation USB drive. Respond with "Yes" or "Y" whenever prompted to do so or the process will be aborted.

Install Windows XP Using USB

  • Step 1
Change the primary boot order of the target computer to boot from the USB. This is done from inside of the BIOS, entry to which is different according to make and model, but the instructions are usually printed at the bottom of the screen during the boot process. Refer to the manual if this is not the case.
  • Step 2
Insert the USB installation drive into the USB port of the target computer and restart the boot process.
  • Step 3
Choose the second option: "TXT Mode Setup Windows XP, Never unplug USB-Drive Until After Logon" when the installation drive's main screen appears.
  • Step 4
Choose the desired partition options and install Windows XP. The computer will restart automatically once the installation is complete. Do not remove the USB drive.
  • Step 5
Choose the first option: "GUI Mode setup Windows XP, Continue Setup + Start XP" and allow Windows to start normally to complete the installation.
