VLC 2.0 RC build available for download, iOS version returns

VLC 2.0 - A major jump over 1.1

There have been several media players for the desktop and each one has a big fan following. VideoLAN Player or VLC, as it is more popularly known as, has reached the next major milestone. The last stable version of the player available on their site is still 1.1.11, but the first release candidate build - 2.0 is now available on their site
. To download the build for your operating system, head over to their download page for development builds. VLC 2.0 is now available for Mac OS X, Linux and the Windows operating system. There’s also a 64-bit version of the Windows being made with this release, but that isn’t available for download, just yet.

The new version of VLC brings a whole bunch of new features and enhancements. There are also going to be the usual set of bug fixes packed in the build. Remember that the release candidate is still not the final build of the software, so there are likely to be some small bug fixes. Blu-ray support is now part of the feature set and there are changes to the user interface that can be seen in the playlist windows. There will also be improved support for third party renderer and codecs. The final release of VLC 2.0 shouldn’t be too far. There’s also an iOS and an Android version being developed. The release may or may not be at the same time as the desktop application release, though. This is the second time VLC Player will be returning to iOS. Early last year, Apple had removed it from the app store after some DRM related issues and also conflict between developers of the app and the developers of the application for desktops.

VLC is one of the most popular media players, alongside others, such as Media Player Classic and KMPlayer. We’ve got a thread started to discuss which media player is the best and favorite.
